Montserrat 2005

The lava dome at the Soufriere Hill volcano on Montserrat started growing again in August of 2005. AVTIS returned in October to make measurements of the growing dome, this time with an operational radiometer. The objective was two-fold: to obtain measurements of the lava flux rate and gather thermal imagery of an active volcanic target.

Photos of the dome from the MVO remote camera at Perches taken in late 2005 between the onset of growth and the arrival of AVTIS. To see more up-to-date photos of the dome visit the MVO website at www.mvo.ms

Even when the weather is clear the dome is partially obscured by gas venting and ash, so AVTIS was ideally suited to make these measurements
