Montserrat 2004

The first field trip to Montserrat took place in May/June of 2004. The Soufriére Hills lava dome underwent a massive collapse in July of 2003 (120 million cubic metres of rock collapsed in 11 hours) so the lava dome was practically non-existent at the time of the trip.

The main aim was therefore to validate the radar operation of AVTIS under field conditions and measure as much of the newly formed topography as possible. The radiometric mode of the instrument was also not implemented at the time of the field trip so the data gathered on Montserrat consists of range measurements only.
