Costa Rica 2005

In the absence of a growing lava dome on Montserrat AVTIS was instead deployed at the Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica, in April and May of 2005. Arenal was chosen because it has been consistently active since its initial eruption in 1968 and is also an andesitic volcano (the same type of lava as at Montserrat). Pyroclastic flows do still occur at Arenal, however it was the more constant extrusion of lava that provided AVTIS with an active target to measure.

Activity mainly consists of the emission of gas plumes and the advance of lava: the over steepened fronts of the lava flow frequently disintegrate into hot rock avalanches down the mountainside.
